The month of May traditionally heralds the start of the rainy season for Jamaica and is an opportunity to harvest rainwater and save money and help the environment at the same time.
Rainwater can be harvested and used around your property, and it’s not difficult to do.
How to Collect Rainwater Using Your Gutters
Having a guttering system on your roof is a plus as it is a key player in rainwater harvesting. In order to properly collect rainwater, you will need:
- Well-maintained roof
- Cleared out gutters
- Rain barrel
- Rainy days
- Distribution system
First, make sure your roof is in good condition. Not only do you want to collect as much rainwater as possible, but you want to keep the water in your barrel.
Your rain barrel will be placed under a gutter’s downspout. Oftentimes, the gutter will need to be cut, or you will need an adjustable gutter for the harvest area. You want the tip of the gutter to reach just above the barrel. If you don’t have a barrel, you can convert one from recycled barrels, or you can purchase a specified rain barrel from the hardware store. You will also want a distribution system, which can be as simple as a built-in spout or can extend to piping irrigation directly from the barrel or having a hose hook-up.
Be sure not to leave water resting in the rain barrel uncovered or for too long as stagnant water can begin to breed mosquitos, or create an odour.
There are many reasons you should consider including rainwater harvesting among water conservation measures.
Reasons to Recycle Rainwater
Collecting and reusing rainwater from your roof is advantageous in many ways. Here are some reasons to begin collecting rainwater:
- Reduces water usage and increases savings
- Gives you control over your water usage (great especially when there is water restrictions or droughts)
- Keeps flooding levels and excess runoff off your property
- Promotes sustainable practices and reduces reliance on wells
- Has a positive environmental impact
- Increases garden health
- Provides properties with a great source of backup water
